In the average American home, about 10% of the energy used each month is for lighting. That also
means 10% of every utility bill. Fortunately, power is one area where environmentally
friendly practices are also economically friendly. The following energy saving
lighting tips will save you money and benefit the environment.
- Use energy-efficient bulbs
While promoting his global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore has said
that energy-efficient light bulbs are a simple but effective way for people to
reduce energy consumption. Energy-efficient bulbs use about 75% less energy than
incandescent bulbs, but shine just as brightly and last 10 times longer.
- Use occupancy and motion sensors
If you're always leaving lights on when you leave a room, installing occupancy sensors can reduce
your energy bill by as much as 10% or 20%. Motion sensitive exterior lighting
will provide the best combination of safety and efficiency.
- Install low voltage track lights
Low voltage track lights are about 30% cheaper to operate than line voltage track lights. You can
also take advantage of track lighting by using task lights for the area you need
illuminated rather than an entire room.
- Harness the sun
Daylight is free, so enjoy natural sunlight by furnishing with windows in mind. A home office set
up next to a large window will both brighten your day and give you a great view.
- Rely on battery-operated area lights
Cordless area lights that run on batteries will adhere to any wall or flat surface. Use them as reading
or closet lights, or as emergency lights in the event of a power outage. Stock
your area lights with rechargeable batteries for even greater energy savings.
- Be dim
Dimmer switches aren't just for ambience. Reducing the light level in a room will save energy
costs and further the life of your light bulbs.
